ZHANG YANG

Zhang Yang is a photographer, documentary filmmaker, and one of the foremost visual chroniclers of China's independent music movement.

For more than two decades, he documented legendary bands such as Miserable Faith (痛仰乐队), Wild Children (野孩子乐队), and Yaksa (夜叉乐队), etc..., following their journeys from small underground livehouses to becoming defining names in Chinese rock music.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Walker Art Center and MOCA New York, yet his lens has always remained closest to the stage, preserving the raw energy, resilience, and cultural spirit of an era.

More than music photography, Zhang's images form a rare visual archive of contemporary Chinese independent music—capturing moments long before they became history.
